Hay, Parsnips & Plenty of Learning: A Brilliant First Visit to Broughgammon Farm

On Tuesday the 25th of November, two of our staff members; Tiérna and Manus accompanied pupils from Gaelscoil An Chaistil on their first visit to Broughgammon farm where local good food advocate: Becky, had arranged some fun activities.
This is part of a project called Sow, Grow Eat – designed to bring children from various backgrounds together to learn about sustainable food practices. It is delivered by The Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust, on behalf of the Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council. This project is funded by PEACEPLUS, a programme managed by the Special EU Programmes Body (SEUPB).

Becky taught the pupils all about the hard work that goes into looking after cows and calves to ensure healthy milk and beef. The pupils then headed off to feed the goats a delicious mix of fresh hay, where several barnyard cats also received an ample petting.
After this, it was off to the fields to dig some parsnips, followed by a harvesting of chard (a leafy, spinach like vegetable) to feed the chickens with. We then headed to the Broughgammon Shop where the pupils made delicious (surprisingly) parsnip scones, which they cooked and had with melted butter.
That concluded the first of what will be many visits to Broughgammon Farm. Stay tuned for updates on the next farm visit with Bushmills Primary School.
