On Wednesday 5th June DAERA Marine and Fisheries and Causeway Coast and Glens Heritage Trust staff were joined by the Mayor of Causeway Coast and Glens Borough Council, Councillor Sean Bateson, and other local representatives to celebrate the opening of Portrush Coastal Zone and the launch of the new ‘’Drifting Apart’ Virtual Reality experience and exhibition.
Funded by the European Regional Development Fund, the ‘Drifting Apart’ project aims to explore and promote the geology of the ‘Northern Peripheries & Arctic Region’, an international area which includes 9 partner countries: the Member States of Finland, Ireland, Sweden and the United Kingdom (Scotland and Northern Ireland) in cooperation with the Faroe Islands, Iceland, Greenland and Norway. Despite geographical distance, the countries of the Northern Periphery & Arctic region share common features and challenges (eg. low population density, low economic diversity, valuable natural resources, high impact from climate change) which can be better explored through international co-operation and collaboration. CCGHT are a lead partner for ‘Drifting Apart’, contributing to projects focused on investigating and promoting the tourism and educational potential of our geo – heritage.
CCGHT’s ‘Drifting Apart’ exhibition and virtual reality experience at Portrush Coastal Zone highlights the outstanding geodiversity of the entire Causeway Coast region, which includes some of the best examples of Earth’s geological history, and explores the foundations of our many outstanding natural landscapes, including the Giant’s Causeway World Heritage Site.
This interactive exhibition is installed at Portrush Coastal Zone along side the centre’s many other features. These include live specimens, discovery pools, a sea viewing platform and a variety of displays exploring the wildlife, geology, environment and marine heritage of our Causeway Coast.
