ABOUT
Stretching for 30km along Northern Ireland’s North Antrim Coast, the Causeway Coast AONB is home to diverse and stunning landscapes, including the iconic Giant’s Causeway and Causeway Coast World Heritage Site.
The western section features the vast dune system at East Strand and striking cliffs of white chalk and black basalt. Dunluce Castle stands as a breathtaking landmark with panoramic views of Donegal and the Skerries to the north.
In contrast to the rugged coastline, the Bush Valley offers a gentler landscape with mixed farmland, woodlands, and the historic village of Bushmills. Moving east, the coastline around the Giant’s Causeway is marked by small rocky bays and headlands shaped by erosion, where farmland stretches to the edge of the cliffs that dramatically drop to the sea below.
Around Ballintoy, towering limestone and basalt cliffs provide sweeping views of White Park Bay and Sheep Island. The dune system at White Park Bay is of national significance, while nearby Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge is one of Northern Ireland’s most popular attractions.
Further east, the rugged landscape around Kinbane features steep basalt cliffs, offering spectacular views of Islay and Rathlin Island. This area is defined by rough grasslands, dry-stone walls, bogland, and patches of vibrant gorse (locally called “whin”).
The Causeway Coast AONB offers a mix of dramatic seascapes, cultural landmarks, and tranquil countryside, making it a must-visit destination for nature lovers and history enthusiasts alike.
MANAGEMENT FORUM
The Causeway Coast AONB Management Forum is a non-statutory membership group that brings together representatives committed to conserving, promoting, and enhancing the area’s natural beauty. The Forum advocates for the unique landscape, heritage, and communities within the AONB.
Guided by the AONB Management and Action Plan, which was developed by the Causeway Coast & Glens Heritage Trust (CCGHT) in collaboration with the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA), the Forum works to implement activities outlined in the plan and respond to emerging issues or opportunities.
PROJECTS
Projects across the Causeway Coast AONB highlight the ongoing impact of our management and action plan, showcasing our commitment to preserving and enhancing heritage. These projects are diverse, interactive, and educational, offering opportunities to engage with heritage and volunteer when possible.
Many of these initiatives are only possible through the support of funders or are delivered in collaboration with key partners.
VOLUNTEERING
We welcome both regular and occasional volunteers and appreciate any time dedicated to helping us implement initiatives aimed at conserving and enhancing the Causeway Coast AONB and the World Heritage Site. Volunteering provides everyone with the chance to make a tangible and positive impact on the built, natural, and cultural heritage of the area for the benefit of all.
With a variety of activities, events, and roles available—both indoors and outdoors—volunteers can learn new skills, connect with like-minded individuals, and promote well-being within the community.
The Causeway Coast & Glens Heritage Trust is committed to offering equal opportunities and actively seeks to recruit volunteers from all segments of the community throughout the year.

🤯A jaw-dropping view of the landscape surrounding Dunluce Castle, one of the gems to be found across the Causeway Coast Area of Natural Beauty.
CCGHT proudly delivers oversight of the UNESCO Giant's Causeway and Causeway Coast World Heritage Site as well as the Causeway Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

A fantastic morning at Portballintrae over the weekend for our Rockpool Ramble in partnership with Centre for Environmental Data and Recording - CEDaR
Participants had the opportunity to explore the shoreline, discover fascinating marine wildlife, and learn more about the rich coastal biodiversity right on our doorstep. From crabs and anemones to sea snails and seaweed, there was plenty to uncover along the rocks and pools.
A big thank you to everyone who joined us and to the team at CEDaR for sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm throughout the event.
It’s always great to see people of all ages connecting with nature and appreciating the incredible natural heritage of the Causeway Coast.
This event is in support of the Blue Flag Award- one of the world’s most recognised awards for beaches and marinas.
Environmental education is a key element of the Blue Flag programme. Live Here Love Here

This little one with the green hat came home full of it! Thank you for organising such a fantastic activity 👏
Amazing!💙
You know a lot when you know what you don’t know! That’s why we believe in bringing our experts, external specialists and local groups together to deliver for the areas you love.
We’ve been using this approach to support natural, built, and cultural heritage through our projects and partnerships for almost 25 years.
Our work connects…
• 1, Local groups: With deep roots in the community
• 2, Subject specialists: From within Team CCGHT and externally too
• 3, Large-scale organisations: Like funders and protected landscape bodies
…for the benefit of all.
