Friday 1st March 2019
11:00am-2:00pm
Raymond and David Hyland’s Farm, 80 Carlaragh Road, Limavady, Co Londonderry
One interesting aspect of local farm heritage in past years was to plant a few orchard trees such as apples, pears, plums and damsons to provide fruit for the family and produce for local markets.
This tradition has also made a great contribution to nature conservation by providing roosting havens and a rich food source for birds and mammals, while the blossom remains a splendid source of nectar and pollen for bees and other pollinating insects.
The value of these orchards in the rural landscape has been recognised by DAERA’s Agri-environment schemes over the last decade or more. As a result many farmers have renovated their small orchard sites and replanted fruit trees on the farm.
If you have fruit trees on your farm that need some pruning attention, or you would like to learn more about the establishment and management of traditional orchards, a free training event will take place on Friday 1st March 2019 at Raymond and David Hyland’s Farm, 80 Carlaragh Road, Limavady, Co Londonderry. At this event informative presentations and practical demonstrations will be given on orchard health, establishment, nutrition, the pruning and shaping of fruit trees, ecology in the orchard and pollination matters.

Rush control methods best suited to Northern Ireland.
In 2014 CAFRE established five rush control demonstration project sites across Northern Ireland to demonstrate different rush control methods. Cutting, weed wiping with glyphosate, spraying with MCPA and liming have taken place at each demonstration site and there is also an untreated plot for comparison.
CAFRE staff will be available to update everyone on the findings to date.
A representative from NIWater will also be in attendance to discuss MCPA and its impact on water quality.
EVENTS ARE FREE & OPEN TO ALL

Take a journey back in time to see historic sites that helped to map Ireland…
Some 200 years ago, the countryside around Lough Foyle was busy with surveyors occupied with measuring and mapping landscapes for the Ordnance Survey. Today, the traces of these activities are still to be seen in the fields in and around Binevenagh. Professor Keith Lilley from Queen’s University Belfast will guide us through these landscapes, following in the footsteps of the Ordnance Survey’s surveyors to visit the monuments built in the 1820s for measuring the Lough Foyle base-line on which the mapping of Ireland depended.
Such was the importance of Colonel Colby’s ‘base-line’ at Lough Foyle, that it was used as a model for similar surveys across the world, including in India and South Africa. By looking at what remains of Colby’s base-line around Lough Foyle, we can begin to appreciate its value as cultural heritage of international importance as well as of local significance.
This tour of the Ordnance Survey’s Lough Foyle base-line will start with a morning talk by Prof. Lilley, followed by a leisurely field-visit by bus to selected historic surveying sites around Binevenagh, with lunch at the Drummond Hotel in Ballykelly. Transport is provided. Stout footwear and rain-gear is recommended.
This event is hosted by the Causeway Coast & Glens Heritage Trust in partnership with Binevenagh and Coastal Lowlands Landscape Partnership Scheme and Queen’s University Belfast.
Free parking and toilet facilities are available at The Peter Thompson Hall in Castlerock. The bus will return to the Peter Thompson Hall at the end of the tour (Building may not be open upon return).
