Help the Binevenagh Landscape Partnership transplant native trees from the dune habitat at the Ulster Wildlife Umbra Nature Reserve.

The Ulster Wildlife Umbra nature reserve is a large and relatively undisturbed area consisting of species-rich dune grassland, wet dune slacks, scrub and woodland. It is home to an impressive array of flowering plants in summer, which in turn support an incredible variety of insects, and is one of the best sites for butterflies in Northern Ireland – interesting species include cryptic wood white, small heath, grayling and dark green fritillary.

As well as monitoring rare and threatened species, Ulster Wildlife control scrub and remove non-native plants such as sea buckthorn to ensure the survival of this unique habitat. The Binevenagh Landscape Partnership are giving Ulster Wildlife a helping hand to maintain this unique sand dune habitat by removing some self seeded tree species and transplanting them to the Curly Burn river to add to the newly created wet woodland habitat.

Trees will be removed and taken to the Curly Burn wet woodland by the Landscape Partnership, ready for planting on the 22nd November.

Meeting Point

We will meet at 9.30am sharp at the Benone Tourist complex , 53 Benone Ave, Limavady BT49 0LQ, and car share to the reserve as there is limited parking space.

What to bring

Be prepared for November weather! Wear warm layers and a waterproof coat and trousers. Bring warm and dry clothing for afterwards. Wear wellies or study boots, and if you have you own gardening gloves, please do bring them along.

Tea, coffee and some sweet treats will be provided, but please bring your own packed lunch and any other drinks and snacks you require.

Some spades and equipment will be available, but if you have your own favorite gardening spade or fork, do bring it along.
