Did you know, hibernation is not necessarily seasonal, but rather depends mainly on the temperature and food availability, as well as other factors such as amount of daylight and hormones. Long periods of temperatures below 15-17°C are thought to be the main reason for hedgehogs entering hibernation. It’s hard to say how much our now unpredictable weather patterns will affect hedgehogs, as well as other hibernating animals. To find out more on hibernation, check out this site.
Make sure to keep an eye out on the roads and in your gardens for hedgehogs trying to stock up their fat stores before the worst of the cold weather comes! Should you come across a hedgehog, please follow the information below, or contact me on research@ccght.org or on my Facebook Help the Hedgehogs for help.
