Castlerock Community Association (CCA) in partnership with the BCLLPS team put forward a proposal for a community trails project as part of the wider Binevenagh Landscape Partnership Scheme. This National Heritage Lottery funded project aims to raise awareness and celebrate the history and heritage of Castlerock village. Information gathered from the local community will be used to develop a self-guided trail network. Three interpreted walking routes have been identified focused on the Victorian village, the Beach and Bann Estuary and Hervey and Hezlett heritage. The walks range from 0.6 miles to 2.9 miles in length and radiate out from the promenade picnic hub in the heart of Castlerock village with the option of developing longer walks by linking to trails within Downhill Forest. A trail head will give detailed information on the trail network, while the replacement of the existing Causeway Coastal Route signage and enhancement of up to four public spaces within the network will create interpretive focal points where stories relating to the area can be told in tactile and imaginative ways.
We hope this project will contribute to the village creating opportunity for activities to engage the local community and visitors, making a difference to the heath and wellbeing of residents.
